What Local SEO Actually Means for a Small Business

"Local SEO" gets thrown around like it's some secret formula. It isn't. It just means helping your business show up when nearby people search for what you do. Here's what it actually involves, without the jargon.

The two places you can show up

When someone searches something like "coffee shop near me," Google shows two things that matter for you. First, the map pack: that little map with three businesses pinned on it near the top. Second, the regular blue-link results below it. They're won in different ways, and you want both.

The map pack runs on your Google Business Profile

That map result comes from your Google Business Profile, not your website. Getting into it comes down to a few things: a complete, verified profile, the right business category, and reviews, lots of local rankings ride on how many recent, genuine reviews you have. If you do one thing this month, claim and fill out your Business Profile.

The regular results run on your website

The blue-link results are about your site. Google wants to see pages that are clearly about what you do and where you do it. That means having real pages for your services and the areas you serve, using the words people actually search, and a site that loads fast and works on a phone. One thin homepage can't rank for everything; dedicated pages can.

Consistency is quietly important

Make sure your business name, address, and phone number are identical everywhere they appear, your site, your Google profile, and any directories. When those don't match, Google gets less confident it's all the same business, and confidence is what it rewards.

Quick wins you can do this month

  • Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile, then get it verified.
  • Ask a few happy customers for a Google review.
  • Make sure your name, address, and phone match exactly across your site and profile.
  • Check that your site loads fast and looks right on a phone.

None of this is magic, it's just steady, honest work that adds up. If you'd rather have someone handle the website side of it for you, that's what I do. Reach out and we'll talk.
